New Work...

What happened to Fall? It seemed to fly by on us. I've been ultra busy working on some custom commissions the past few months. I'll be sharing them in the coming days once I get some pics uploaded to my PC from my camera. This latest sculpt was of a Viking. The sculpture measures just over 15" wide and stands ~24" tall. I was given a pic by the client to work with. The sculpture is on a stand, but can be taken from the stand and mounted on the wall if desired. This was a fun build for me. I love the experimentation aspect of working on a new design. Sometimes you start with one idea, which in the end may have changed several times to get to the final product.

Trout Wine Rack

I made this trout wine rack last night. I like it so much, I'm planning a series of racks with various fish species. This one is modeled after a rainbow trout - one of my favorites. The piece is 30" long and has been clear coated. Each piece is numbered, signed, and dated on the back.

Propane Tank Luminaries

Above are a few tank designs I made here this past weekend for the market. They're made from old 20 lb propane tanks. They make very unique gifts. The tops are hinged, and there is a drainage hole in the bottom. Place a candle, or light inside and you are ready to go. Tanks can be customized in any way - Names, dates, addresses, images, etc. If you have any tanks you'd like to donate, I'd be happy to take them off your hands! Enjoy. Thanks.

Leaf Bowl

This Maple and Oak leaf bowl has been one of my latest custom commissions I thought I'd share. The metal is made from 11 ga. recycled steel. The veins are all raised weld lines which gives the bowl some texture and depth. There are 4 maple, and 4 oak leaves in this bowl. It's 16-18" in diameter, and 2.5" in height. Stay tuned for some more fall creations. I'm nearly done with a batch of propane tank luminaries. I'll post some pics as soon as I get them painted up. I can't believe it's September all ready. This year went by so fast!

2009 Saugatuck Waterfront Invitational

The 2009 Saugatuck Waterfront Invitational was held on July 4th. What a fun day! Thanks to all who supported my work and showed up to chat. I had a great time and even managed to win an award!

New Creations

Shot of the fish
"Fish in Reeds #2"
Copper - "Rock Phoenix #1"

I'm gearing up for the Waterfront Invitational Fine Art show this Saturday, July 4th in Saugatuck. Above are a few new creations I've been working on. The Phoenix rock bird was made completely out of copper and has been brazed together. This piece took nearly 8 hours to complete. The fish in the reeds piece is fun. The fish look like they are happily swimming around. I've fashioned the fish to resemble a blue gill, one of my favorite fish.

It's looking like great weather this weekend for the Saugutuck show. If you like Art and want something fun to do, check out Saugatuck. If you've never been to the parade in Sauguatuck I highly suggest it! The kids will love it. I've never been to another parade that throws out more candy then this one. It's crazy. Regardless, I wish you all a fun, safe, and happy fourth of July!

God bless the USA!

Yard Panels

Above is one of my most recent commissions. I thought I'd share. These yard panels are a unique way to break up your landscape, or create an "anti-gate". Each panel is 32" wide by 4' tall. 1/2" round stock has been welded to the panels sides. 15" extend well into the ground and have been cold galvanized. These panels will eventually start to patina over time which will contrast nicely against a green landscape. They could be clear coated also, if you wanted to maintain the metallic appearance. The design was based off the clients sketches and was plasma cut by hand. I'm looking at adding more pics of various yard panels on my website. They are becoming increasingly popular.

April 2009 - Show Season

Wow, I can't believe it is April already. This year really crept up on me. I'm in the process of a build-up going into our second show of the season. The past couple days I've been working on some Large style flowers. I really like how the burn marks show through on this metal. I have to clear coat them yet, but they look amazing!

The tulip time art and craft show is being held in Centennial park in Holland May 2 and 3. Tulip Time Festival is one of the largest festivals in the states. If you ever get a chance to check it out, do so. There is a lot to do! For more information check out:
Tulip Time Festival

Come check me out Saturday or Sunday. The weather is looking great this weekend...knock on wood! I'll be in the fine arts section on the South side of the park. Thanks!

Happy New Year - 2009

Well, it's a new year. My wish for all of my friends, family and anyone that may have fallen across this page is that you all have a prosperous new year, filled with happiness and love - and all the fluffy stuff that comes with it!

2008 was a hectic year for me. The Holland Farmer's market kept me busy throughout the year. For anyone who may not know me well enough, you can find me at the Holland Farmer's Market on Saturdays May through December selling my art. It's been an awesome outlet for me. I think one of the most exciting aspects of it has been meeting all the cool people.

Working full time and producing metal art as a side business is challenging in itself. Add a wife and two children in the mix and you've got a recipe that I call, "controlled chaos". That's right, I have a degree in time management and damage control. At times I feel pushed and pulled in so many directions. I love my work, but more importantly I love my family. Sometimes it's necessary to take a step back and reassess what's important to you. Family for me has always come first.

Life is good - more later.

Squirrel Feeder

There's something fascinating about these little critters. I love watching them. Last year I created some cornstalk squirrel feeders. They are a fun and unique way to feed the squirrels. I guess you could consider it art too.

Long live the squirrel.
