Holland Garden Tour

 It was a beautiful Saturday for the garden tour, July 17th 2021.  Over 300 tickets were sold and I came home with only 4 sculptures in my trailer. Thank you to Kyle and Jackie Curtiss for allowing me to set-up my art amongst their beautiful landscaping.  Thank-you to Pam Ruiter and the Holland Garden Club for organizing the event.  

 

   It’s 2020.  It’s been a Long minute since I’ve posted anything on this blog.  I plan to do better.  I took a couple years off from making metal art.  I focused on family.  Family is the forefront of my life. Without them,  I wouldn’t be who I am today.

   I’m excited for the next chapter of my metal art career. I plan on bigger projects catering to the clients personal space in their homes, gardens and yards. If there’s a space you are looking at that needs a pick me up,  shoot me a text or email.  I’d love to talk about your space and propose some concepts and quote you your own personal metal sculpts.

Find yourself

Your peace and happiness lays just beneath the surface.  Sometimes the walk through the beginning of your life is blind.  You walk thinking you know where you are going, what your life is meant to be, and how it is going to end up.  At points, we all have gotten that rug pulled out from underneath us.   

It's at that point you see the light.  You find what has been locked up behind several doors and cloaked in darkness.  Happiness is the ability to find your freedom, to be alone and be perfectly happy with it, to find your passion that drives you each day.  Our lives are sometimes spent wandering.  When we find our compass it becomes clear as day.  What layed below the surface in darkness was made to be seen, like looking down through clear ice.  Find your happiness and you will find your peace.

Home Studio

There's something about your childhood home that brings back the best memories.  I sit here listening to the birds and the frogs in the creek below and I am at peace.  

I moved my studio into the old barn at my mom's house last fall.  I'm continuing to renovate it to suite my needs.  It's small, but I can make it work.  The older I get, the more I realize - the less I have the more peace I've found.   There is LESS worry, self doubt, and anxiousness.  I'm happy.  

Life has a way of finding who you are. You are placed in trials, hardships, tests through your life.  How you come out of these trials, builds who you are.  It defines us.  It makes you travel the paths you were meant to travel.  

Find your path my friends.  Do what makes you happy. Play loudly into the night. Do not let your candle flicker,  throw gasoline on it and let it burn.  We have this one life.  Stay thirsty and fight for your goals.  Kick scratch and claw, you'll get there.  Don't ever give up.

Russell Rocket Stove

Rocket stoves have been around for a long while.  I went ahead with a large prototype build recently.  It burns hot and is very efficient.  It takes a few minutes to fire it up using twig biomass or kindling. The feed tube is set at a 45 degree angle and is self feeding.  They call these a rocket stove, because of the rocket sound it emits from the tube when it gets going.  

I plan to build these in a smaller design for camping and ease of use.  I will update as they are completed.    If interested in your own rocket stove, give me a yell.

Looking ahead

Hello all!  I haven't written in a long time!  My apologies.  I've moved my studio to Grand Haven, and have spent much of last fall and this winter setting it up.

 I'm looking forward to upcoming year.  Though last year I closed shop early on the markets and shows, I plan on ramping it up this year.  You can find me on Saturdays at the Holland Farmers Markets.    Come on down and check out the unique sculptures this year.  I have a few other shows coming up, and will share the details at a later date.  Many Thanks to all my art lovers who enjoy the sculptures as much as I do!  

New Beginnings

    I'm very anxious and ready for this new season to start.  It has been a long winter and I'm ready to start off on a new adventure, and a fresh start.  2013 was a tough year for me on a personal level.  I took a lot of time off from creating sculptures do to unforeseen circumstances.  Such as life, it will always carry on.   I've been invigorated again to start producing work that everyone can enjoy.  Many thanks to my loyal followers, clients, and fans that come back to see my latest creations. Without you, I wouldn't be where I am today.  Thanks!  Blessings!

"Tree of LIfe" Sculpture

Here's my latest installation in Detroit, MI - "Tree of Life".  Art of Leadership Foundation commissioned me to build it.  This sculpture stands 16 feet in height on pedestal base.  Many thanks to my dad Jim Russell for helping deliver and install!  I enjoyed the challenge of this build.  It's made from stainless steel tube and stainless plate.

Herons on the Lake

A friend passed this on to me recently. They captured a great shot of a Heron next to my metal ones. I love the silhouette of the metal against the gentle wake of the lake. How relaxing is that!?

2011, a year in review

2011 was a busy and productive year.  Here are a few pics of some of the smaller works I produced throughout the year.  Enjoy!

Kinetic Calla Lily Sculpture - Lake Macatawa

Commissioned as a memorial sculpture, this kinetic sculpture is made from stainless steel sheet and tube.  The center blade assembly spins in the slightest breeze.  A custom patination process was created for this piece to accent the sculpture in the sunlight.  It sits in a beautiful and peaceful location on Lake Macatawa.

Art Prize 2011 - Stainless Fountain

The sculpture for Artprize 2011 was a stainless steel and fused glass fountain.  This one took a tremendous amount of time to produce.  It was displayed at the Grand Rapids Public Library. We were proud to be in the top ten of the Heartside voting district.  Artprize 2011 was another great experience.  Enjoy, here are some of the build and installation pictures:
